We’re Not in a Battle; We’re in a War

For those of you on our mailing list, it may feel like every other day is bringing yet another urgent call to action from Cornerstone. And, as amazing and patient as our supporters are, we have heard from some of you that you just can’t keep up with it all. Believe me, we understand. Our small team works hard to stay on top of hundreds of bills and all the twists and turns of hectic House and Senate committees and full floor sessions, but it can be overwhelming. And we don’t send out our updates and calls to action lightly. The issues we are facing are critical, and every day brings new challenges as well as new opportunities to have an impact.

Here’s some good news. We’re already halfway through this year’s legislative session, and we’ve already had some significant wins, thanks to the engagement of people like you who care enough to invest their time and energy in speaking up. As we look ahead, we’d like to share some of our hard-won wisdom when it comes to engaging on the issues day in and day out.

  1. You never know what might happen next. On the surface, the path of a bill looks pretty straightforward, but that can be very deceptive. Votes flip, legislators are absent, committees act unexpectedly, and bills can die or be resurrected unexpectedly.

  1. Think of this as a war of attrition. With so many battles being fought simultaneously on multiple fronts, it is easy to become demoralized and overwhelmed. We need to pace ourselves to maintain our focus and energy. That may mean we’re at the tip of the spear today, and in reserve tomorrow. Knowing where you can make the biggest difference and exercising your constituent muscle where it most counts are key.

  1. Every effort pays dividends. A single email or phone call can make a difference. Allotting a small amount of time consistently each week for action can have a cumulatively larger impact than you can imagine.

  1. It’s never complete. We’re facing profound societal and cultural turmoil and attacks. When we win on an issue (think the Fetal Life Protection Act), we’re sure to immediately be on the defensive as they come after us. And when we lose on a critical issue, we dust ourselves off and plan our next step to re-engage.

Our purpose in communicating to our supporters is two-fold –  to keep you up to date on the latest developments in critical legislation relevant to our core issues and to let you know how you can make a difference. We understand that not everyone can act on every call to action, but if everyone acts as they are able, together we can reach our shared goal of making New Hampshire a state where God is honored, religious freedom flourishes, families thrive, and life is cherished.
