Find a Safe Haven

What is a Baby Safe Haven?

A Safe Haven is a church, hospital, fire station, police station—or now, even a Baby Box—where you can safely and anonymously surrender your newborn up to 61 days old.

Whether you choose to hand your baby to a person or place them in a secure Safe Haven Baby Box, there will be no judgment, no legal consequences, and no shame.

This is a courageous, loving option for moms who feel they can’t care for their baby.

What is the Process?

There are two ways to surrender your baby safely

In Person

  • Bring your baby (up to 61 days old) to any New Hampshire Safe Haven location—hospital, fire station, police station, or, during posted business hours, a church.
  • Hand your baby to someone on duty and tell them you’re surrendering under the Safe Haven law.
  • You don’t need to give your name, answer questions, or sign anything.

Safe Haven Baby Box

  • Baby Boxes are secure drop-off boxes that allow complete anonymity.
  • Once closed, emergency personnel are notified immediately.
  • The first Baby Box in NH is at Bethlehem Fire Department, with more expected across the state.

Where can I find a Baby Safe Haven?

The Safe Haven law exists to protect life
and to protect you.

You WILL NOT be arrested.

You WILL NOT be tracked down.

You WILL NOT be judged.

Commonly Asked Questions

Is this legal?

Yes. New Hampshire law allows you to safely surrender a baby up to 61 days old with no legal consequences.

What happens to my baby?

Your baby will get immediate care and then be placed with a loving adoptive family through the state’s child protection services.

Do I have to talk to anyone?

No. With a Baby Box, you don’t have to speak to anyone. If you choose to hand your baby to a person, you can still remain anonymous.

Will I get in trouble?

No. As long as your baby is under 61 days old, you will not face any legal consequences. New Hampshire’s safe haven law includes an “exclusionary rule” which specifies that a parent surrendering an infant may not be prosecuted for any crime discovered as a result of giving up the baby.

Will I be judged?

Absolutely not. You are making a brave, loving choice. The people receiving your baby are trained to respond with care, not criticism.
