CONCORD, NH – Today, CPR-Action Representative, Ellen Kolb, will testify before the NH House Judiciary Committee on House Bill 531, expressing Cornerstone’s support of a parents’ right to be notified when their daughter, a minor, is seeking an abortion:
“It is time that New Hampshire got with the program and not only recognized a parents’ interest in the healthcare of their child, but also commended parents for taking an interest in wanting what’s best for their young daughters. Under New Hampshire’s previous parental notification law, Justice O’Connor, writing for a unanimous court in Ayotte wrote: “…States unquestionably have the right to require parental involvement when a minor considers terminating her pregnancy …”
The “defects” found by lower-level courts in the New Hampshire notification statute, at issue in Ayotte, could be remedied by adding a health exception and by addressing concerns about the speed of a judicial bypass provision. The sponsors of HB 531 address that concern in this legislation.
