CONCORD, NH – Today, the New Hampshire House defeated SB489, a bill which would have expanded gambling in the state by establishing six casinos and 17,000 slot machines throughout the state. The vote was 212-158.

Commenting on the defeat of this legislation was the Director of Cornerstone-Action, Kevin Smith:

“We applaud the bi-partisan coalition in the House for defeating this very flawed piece of legislation,” said Smith. “Passing this bill would have justified the massive increases in state spending over the last three years by creating yet another revenue scheme that relied heavily on taxing the most poor in our society. Hopefully the legislature will take the responsible route now towards fixing the budget problem by cutting additional spending.”
