Legislative Update: Senate Votes on Four Critical Bills

HB 625, the Fetal Life Protection Act

STATUS: The Senate voted Thursday to Table HB 625. However, the language of the bill prohibiting abortion after 24 weeks has been added to the state budget. Cornerstone is still advocating for changes to HB 625 based on the amendments originally sponsored by Senator Birdsell. These amendments are crucial to further strengthen the bill against potential legal challenges.

WHAT YOU CAN DO: Please contact your Senator and ask them to support amending HB 625 to address the areas covered in the proposed Birdsell Amendments.

HB 542-A, the Religious Liberty Act

STATUS: Just this past Thursday, the NH Senate voted along party lines to passHB 542 with amendment. The Senate version of HB 542-A largely leaves intact the specific state-of-emergency protections for churches contained in the House bill. While Cornerstone ideally would have liked to see the Senate approve Rep. Ammon’s bill as passed by the House, the amended version nonetheless does move the ball forward in protecting religious liberty. As an amended bill, HB 542-A will now return to the NH House for approval.

WHAT YOU CAN DO: There is no action to be taken on HB 542-A at this time.

HB 440, the Civil Liberties Defense Act

STATUS: The Senate voted to re-refer HB 440 to the Senate Judiciary Committee. Cornerstone will continue to fight on this bill.

WHAT YOU CAN DO: No further action will be taken on HB 440 this legislative session, but be on the lookout for suggested action in the fall.

HB 233, the Born Alive Infant Protection Act

STATUS: The Senate voted to re-refer HB 233 to the Senate Judiciary Committee. Cornerstone will continue to fight on this bill.

WHAT YOU CAN DO: No further action will be taken on HB 233 this legislative session, but be on the lookout for suggested action in the fall.
