Legislative Update 04/03/2023: Your Help is Urgently Needed to Protect Life in New Hampshire!

Your Support is Urgently Needed to Help Protect Pre-Born Life

HB 224 — Sign in now in opposition. Contact your senator to vote NO. Read our full analysis of what happened in the House last week and why.

Last week, in a tragic blow to life in New Hampshire, the House of Representatives voted to pass HB 224. HB 224 is a bill that would allow all abortions up to the moment of birth, for any reason. The bill passed 205-178, with a group of Republican representatives siding with Democrats in voting to allow the killing of viable, preborn children. HB 224 will now go to the Senate.

HB 224 will have a hearing in the Senate Judiciary Committee on Thursday, April 6, at 1:00 PM in Room 100 of the State House. We urge you to sign in now in opposition to the bill.

Now that HB 224 has passed the House, the bill is coming even closer to the Governor’s desk, where it would certainly be signed into law. We must act now to prevent this atrocity from happening, and to protect all the innocent lives that would be ended should the bill also be passed by the Senate. Before HB 224 reaches the Senate, we urge you to contact your senator and ask them to oppose this dangerous legislation.

New Hampshire law currently permits the killing of any healthy, viable child before six months’ gestation, and the Fetal Life Protection Act contains an exception for fatal fetal anomalies. Consequently, the lives this bill jeopardizes are viable pre-born babies six months and older. These children could live and thrive outside the womb if induced and delivered on the day the abortion takes place.

HB 224 stands as a significant threat to pre-born life, as our governor, Chris Sununu, has called to remove all penalties for violating the Fetal Life Protection Act.  Although he once promised to stand behind legislation to protect these young lives if elected, he is now the only Republican governor in America pushing for abortion up to birth, and has pledged to sign the bill if it reaches his desk. Additionally, Chris Sununu personally lobbied for a functionally identical bill in the House just last year.

Stand Up for Parents’ Rights

SB 272 – Sign in now in support of the bill. Contact your representative to vote YES.

SB 272, the Senate version of the parental bill of rights, has advanced through the Senate and into the House. SB 272 includes vital language to prevent the covert, social gender transitioning of children by public school systems.

Parental rights in NH are in crisis. Many school districts have enacted nearly identical policies, based on a model from left-wing advocacy group, GLSEN, promising to engage in the covert social transitioning of children and conceal this process from parents. SB 272 will provide needed protections for parents’ fundamental right to direct the upbringing of their children without authoritarian state interference.

Progressives argue, without evidence, that parents can’t be trusted, and open communication with them will cause harm to their children. Such covert practices without the knowledge of the parents essentially gives schools overriding authority to make critical health and treatment decisions for children and may be driven more by ideology than true concern for the individual child. Loving parents can’t be left out of the equation, and schools should not be making these decisions on behalf of the child.

WHAT YOU CAN DO:

SB 272 will have a hearing in the House Education Committee on Tuesday, April 18th, at 10:00 AM in Reps Hall.

1. Register your support of SB 272 by signing in support of the bill here.

You can find step-by-step instructions on how to sign in here.

2. Submit written testimony. You can do this when you sign in. Simply hit “choose file” under step number four to upload a document with your testimony, or type your testimony into the provided box.

3. We urge you to come and testify in person. We have step-by-step instructions on how to testify here. You can also reach out to us at cornerstone@nhcornerstone.org if you have any questions about the testifying process.

Additionally, we urge you to contact your representatives and ask them to support SB 272, so that parents may have the fundamental right to direct the upbringing of their children without destructive authoritarian state interference.

Defeats Across New Hampshire Local Elections

Last week, many New Hampshire towns held their local elections. While the voter turnout of the cultural left was high, the turnout of conservative voters was unfortunately low, resulting in general losses by conservative candidates.

From the pattern of these elections, it is clear there is a cultural weakness on the right that makes conservatives less motivated to turn out for these local elections. We often see that conservatives are more likely to think of themselves as “just living my life,” and the result is the cultural left wins and dominates by default.

However, the mindset of “just living my life” leads to devastating affects at the local, municipal level. These elections determine not only the regulations of your town, but they determine issues such as recognition of biological sex in schools, pornographic educational material, and fiscal priorities. As these elections determine who teaches your children and who spends your money, among many other issues, it is of growing importance to participate in elections and legislation at a local level.
