Legislative Update 02/21/22

A Sad Week for Defenders of Life, But We Are Not Done! Read the latest and act today.

HB 1609, relative to the scope of the fetal protection act

WHEN: This past Thursday, the House voted down an amendment to HB 1609 which would have strengthened our new six-month abortion ban and instead voted to pass HB 1609 in its original form. As passed by the House, HB 1609 completely nullifies New Hampshire’s six-month abortion ban by removing its enforcement mechanism and adding open-ended exceptions. Thursday’s vote is a historically unprecedented betrayal. The NH House has just become the first GOP-led legislative body in the United States to ever vote to authorize unlimited abortion up to birth.

CORNERSTONE POSITION: Cornerstone OPPOSES this bill.

WHY: Read our full commentary on the House decision here.

WHAT YOU CAN DO:

  1. Contact the House Finance Committee and ask them to vote ITL on HB 1609.
  2. Contact your GOP Reps and ask them to do everything in their power to support the Fetal Life Protection Act.

HB 1673, relative to women’s health privacy and repealing the fetal health protection act

WHEN: This past Friday, the House Judiciary Committee voted 11-10 Ought to Pass on an amended version of HB 1673 designed to totally nullify the Fetal Life Protection Act. The deciding vote was cast by the Republican Committee Chair, Edward Gordon.

CORNERSTONE POSITION: Cornerstone OPPOSES this bill.

WHY: Like HB 1609, the amended version of HB 1673 is designed to gut the Fetal Life Protection Act by removing the vital ultrasound requirement and adding an open-ended “health” exception. This gives abortionists the final word on when and why an abortion can occur, even up to birth. Read our full commentary on the Judiciary Committee’s decision here.

WHAT YOU CAN DO:

  1. Contact House Speaker Sherman Packard, and Majority Leader Jason Osborne and ask them why Rep. Gordon is allowed to remain as head of the House Judiciary Committee.
  2. Contact your representatives and ask them to vote against the Committee recommendation of OTP and instead vote Inexpedient to Legislate — ITL — on HB 1673.

HB 1180, relative to the state recognition of biological sex

WHEN: This Tuesday, February 22, at 9:30 am, the House Health and Human Services Committee will hold a public hearing on HB 1180.

CORNERSTONE POSITION: Cornerstone SUPPORTS this bill.

WHY: HB 1180 would ensure that public entities are allowed to differentiate between biological men and women in athletic competitions, criminal incarceration, and places of intimate privacy, such as bathrooms and locker rooms.

WHAT YOU CAN DO:

  1. Contact the Health and Human Services Committee and ask them to vote Ought to Pass on HB 1180.
  2. Sign in remotely to register your support. For step-by-step instructions on how to sign in, go here.

HB 1625, repealing the prohibition on entering or remaining on a public way or sidewalk adjacent to a reproductive health care facility.

WHEN: This past Friday the House Judiciary Committee voted 12-9 on a recommendation of Inexpedient to Legislate on HB 1625. Two Republicans, Edward Gordon and Joe Alexander voted ITL.

CORNERSTONE POSITION: Cornerstone SUPPORTS this bill.

WHY: HB 1625 corrects what is essentially an unconstitutional free speech throttle around New Hampshire abortion centers.

WHAT YOU CAN DO:

  1. Contact House Speaker Sherman Packard and Majority Leader Jason Osborne and ask them why Reps. Gordon and Alexander remain on the Judiciary Committee.
  2. Contact your representatives and ask them to vote against the committee recommendation of ITL and instead support a vote of Ought to Pass on HB 1625.
